Before your elders spoke or sang
Before they first felt love
Deep in Airgead Canyon
The Terlin Mine was dug

The Terlin family owned this town
With mithril stacked up tall
Though only for the briefest time
Until they lost it all

Some old folks say they dug too deep
And other say too fast
The mithril mine that fed this town
Could never truly last

The town was drunk on argent wealth
Each miner fully fed
Until the beasts of old Kalduhr
Filled every soul with dread

Each miner sang a different song
Of scratching in the walls
Or shifting earth or sharpened fangs
And crashing rocks that fall.

Despite these tales, the Terlins pushed
Each day a faster pace
Until the Great Beast’s massacre
Not one returned that day.

Finally the mines were closed
The few left blocked the way
Now braves ones delve though few return
While wise folk stay away.

The Mithril Mines of Airgead Canyon is a simple, yet surprising, three set incursion for Trophy Gold designed to be played as an introductory one-shot. The incursion takes advantage of multiple fantasy tropes, but is particularly focused on what happens when we dig too deep and go too far in pursuit of treasure.

This one has an AMAZING poem at the beginning. Seriously. This poem should be set to music; it's so clever and fun. I could just see a bunch of dwarves singing it around a fire while the hobbits do up the washing (or something)
The big twist here is really great. The moment is really striking on the page, and I can imagine the players yelling with excitement when it becomes apparent what's really happening ... I'd run it.

I ran this yesterday for a group of two, a champion and a soldier. Great little incursion, and so easy to run! Well written, evocative, and plenty of material to pick from. I will from now on recommend it whenever someone asks for an adventure for a new Trophy GM. 5 out of 5!

As a bonus, here is a German translation of the ballad (in metre) in case anybody ever needs it: 

Bevor die Eltern der Eltern geboren,
So heißt es in den Sagen,
Ward in den Tiefen der Airgead-Schlucht
Die Terlin-Mine gegraben.

Der Terlin-Sippe gehörte die Stadt,
Ihnen gehörten die Loren,
Doch dauert' ihr Glück nur kurze Zeit,
Alles ging verloren.

Manche sagen, sie gruben zu tief,
Zu schnell ließen sie bohren.
Das Mithril, das den Reichtum brachte
Ging schon bald verloren.

Thanks for the generous feedback! My initial hope was to create this as an introductory incursion so I'm glad it worked. I don't speak German, but I love that you took the time for a translation.

I have been thinking about doing a small revision. When I've run the incursion it feels like it needs an interesting NPC somewhere down in the mines. Perhaps a creature willing to talk, a spirit, or something like that.

Agreed, someone to talk to would be a nice addition.

How do you pronounce Airgead - something like AIR- jee?

Pronunciation varies regionally but ar-ig-udh is what I had in mind, which is one of the ways it’s pronounced in Ireland.
